Story
When four Sisters of Mercy traveled from Providence, Rhode Island to Hartford in May of 1852, there was neither a school nor a convent to meet them. Yet within a week of their arrival, they began to impart their mission to serve the less fortunate and frail by opening a school in the basement of St. Patrick's Church in Hartford, CT.

In a short time, this handful of Sisters purchased the Terry Farm in West Hartford, a dairy farm bordered by Steele Road, Albany Avenue, Asylum Avenue and a point west of Trout Brook. Several sisters moved into the farmhouse near the corner of Albany Avenue and Steele Road and took in with them a small group of elderly people to care for. Together they worked the farm for income and sustenance.

This remarkable site eventually became the cornerstone of Saint Mary Home, a long-term care facility founded for the elderly. Today, Saint Mary Home serves more than 400 patients, residents and clients at various stages along the continuum of care for the elderly and the underserved poor.

Saint Mary Home provides an array of care options including skilled nursing care; supportive independent living; post-hospital recovery; physical, occupational and speech therapy services; a medical model adult day care program; specialized dementia care and respite care.
